Napoleon Perdis Cinders Color Disc Eyeshadow EOTD swatch & review

Napoleon Perdis Cinders Color Disc

Do I need another grey eyeshadow in my life? I think you meant to ask, ‘why wouldn’t I need another grey shadow in my life.’ A lady or man or none of the above can never have enough grey clothes, nail polishes or eyeshadows. That’s my rule and I’m sticking to it.
Speaking of grey eyeshadow… fresh from Napoleon Perdis’ Cinderella-themed 2013 collaboration with the Australian Ballet is Napoleon Perdis Cinders Color Disc, a limited edition charcoal shimmer eyeshadow.

Napoleon Perdis Cinders Color Disc – applied DRY, over PRIMER, and applied WET
The pigmentation on Cinders is pretty good for a dark eyeshadow, just as long as you’re either applying it to a sticky base like an eyeprimer or foiling it with a damp brush. The shimmer takes on a deep lustrous, almost greenish tinge when applied wet, so I recommend foiling it wet with a damp brush as a base colour and then blending it off with lighter eyeshadows to get the most bang for your buck colour-wise.
Napoleon Perdis Color Discs can be used wet/dry, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different ways of building your colour intensity!
The shadow itself is soft enough to be easily picked up by a brush, but not so soft that it crumbles or gives lots of shadow fallout. It held its colour reasonably well over the course of a day, fading a little after eight hours of wear over an eye primer. For extra colour staying power I’d recommend applying Cinders over a deep charcoal or black cream eyeshadow.

Finally a quick five minute smokey eye using Cinders Color Disc. I haven’t worn makeup this dark in a very, very long time!

Dior 5 Couleurs Mystic Metallics Constellation EOTD, swatch & review

Dior 5 Couleurs Mystic Metallics Constellation
Dior 5 Couleurs Mystic Metallics Constellation
I’m fairly sure I’ve spoken before about a previous life where I was thin and pretty enough to be a Dior Girl. I worked mostly at the David Jones story on Castlereagh St, alternating between smiling winsomely at bored husbands as I enticed them to treat their wives to a surprise bottle of J’Adore (as I said, I was a lot  younger and cuter then), and doing makeup appointments. It was always a big deal whenever the new Dior makeup collections came out, because more often than not it meant one thing: new Dior 5 Couleurs palettes!
Now, quite a few years later, I still get that little pop of excitement when I unbox a brand new Dior palette. Partially it’s fond memories of a happy period in my working life, and partially it’s because if you don’t get a little rush of endorphins from unwrapping something luxurious and pricey then you’re either dead or have shunned all earthly indulgences (in either case this so, so isn’t the blog for you.)
Which, finally, brings me to the little luxury that crossed my desk last week: Dior 5 Couleurs Mystic Metallics Constellation, a new eyeshadow quint from the Fall 2013 Mystic Metallics collection.
Dior 5 Couleurs Mystic Metallics Constellation

There are five shadows in the Constellation palette, all in shades of pink or purple with one antique gold contrast shade. The shadows are embossed with Monsieur Dior’s signature star charm, with the high shimmer shades marked with a scattering of stars and the satin shades with just one.
  1. Soft antique gold in a glittery shimmer finish. This can be applied dry for a very sparse shimmer fleck effect, or applied wet to create an intense foil effect.
  2. Dirty mauve with a satin finish.
  3. Deep plum with silver sparkle.
  4. Mushroom pink with a satin finish.
  5. Icy pink highlighter with a frost finish.
Wearability is average, with the colours applying sheerly when applied dry. If you want to max your colour potential I suggest applying with a damp brush over a primer base, and possibly using a plum cream shadow as a base if you wish to saturate the purple colour palette. The shadows themselves are an excellent texture, soft enough to be easily picked up with a brush but not so soft that they crumble or scatter.
While the sheerness of the shadows might be a dealbreaker for hardcore makeup enthusiasts, I think that it makes this palette a wearable option for folks who want to look polished and ‘done’ without looking, well, overdone.

For this look I used the two satin finish colours to create a very simple soft smokey eye. I applied the mushroom pink across my lid with a damp brush to boost its lustre, then applied a soft wash of the deep dirty mauve on the outer corner of my lid  and into the crease.

For this look my goal was to distract from the fact that I’ve been under the weather for a while, so I cranked up the metallic shine by applying the antique gold glitter shadow with a wet brush. This amped up the shine and opacity, creating an eye-catching sparkling lid offset with simple bronze liner and black mascara. Remember the magic rule of makeup: sparkle can be a useful distraction when applied judiciously!

Warm Orange MAC Cosmetics EOTD

Warm Orange MAC Cosmetics EOTD
Warm Orange MAC Cosmetics EOTD
Another day, another eye of the day post. Now that the weather is finally warming up it’s time for one thing: o-o-o-orange! I love wearing warm coral and orange tones in my makeup because it’s infinitely flattering on my cool-toned skin, it plays up my grey eyes, and it doesn’t turn muddy or flat. I have trouble wearing browns and golds, but give me a vibrant orange or a deep copper eyeshadow and I’m so there.

Simple Warm Orange Eye of the Day

  • Primer: Too Faced Shadow Insurance
  • Brow highlight: MAC Cosmetics Shroom
  • Crease: MAC Cosmetics Expensive Pink
  • Lid: MAC Cosmetics Firespot blended into a sheer dab of Coppering
  • Eyeliner: none

  • Mascara: Benefit They’re Real! on upper lashes and lower outer corner

Good Morning Spring!

Good Morning Spring! With Grown, Aurora, L’Occitane, Origins and ModelCo
Good freakin’ morning! The sun is (probably) shining, the sky is (possibly) blue, the birds are singing and in general it’s Spring as heck outside. Haul yourself out of bed and seize the day with these warm weather wonders, my friend!
  • Grown Alchemist Body Cleanser is a lightweight bath and shower gel that’s earthy and inviting without being overpoweringly floral. My cranky irritable skin loves the light foaming formula because it cleanses without drying, plus it never clashes with my daily perfume. Nice! The packaging of this shower gel has changed since I took this photograph, but the ingredients and pricing remain exactly the same. (AU$24.95, Grown Alchemist)
  • Aurora Lemon & Ginger Tea is a chance find from my local IGA, and to be totally truthful I only picked it up because it had the nicest packaging design amongst a sea of gaudy Lipton boxes. Lucky I bought it though, as the ginger, lemongrass, lemon verbena and lemon peel makes for an ultra refreshing caffeine-free morning wakeup.
  • L’Occitane Verdon EDT is a new addition to my fragrance library. Now that the weather is warmer and my usual perfume is feeling a little weighty, I’ve shifted back to wearing brighter and crisper scents. L’Occitane Verdon Eau de Toilette is a burst of peppermint and citrus high notes balanced against cool water notes, with medium sillage and a surprisingly long wear time for an EDT. (AU$50, L’Occitane)
  • Origins Starting Over moisturiser was another chance purchase. I went to replace my moisturiser and found out that it had been discontinued, so I made a quick decision to try this mimosa and Argan leaf moisturiser which the young lass at Kit helpfully suggested that would be good for ‘mature’ skin like mine (I’m 30, so either I’ve got the face of a senior citizen or everyone looks ancient when you’re a fresh-faced 18-year-old shop assistant).
Starting Over is a fine moisturiser, maybe not as plush feeling as my old tub of Make A Difference, but what makes it unique is its dry finish. Most dry skin moisturisers are heavy creams that absorb water and sweat and feel sticky in humid weather, but Starting Over dries to a velvety dry finish and doesn’t go tacky or ‘lift’ during the day. If you’ve got dry skin but can’t bear the thought of wearing heavy creams in the heat, take a peep at this lil’ number from Origins. (AU$69, Kit Cosmetics)
  • And if all of this fails to get you going in the morning, fake it ’til you make it with ModelCo Cheek & Lips. Dab some of this rosy stain on your cheekies and dab it on your kisser, and fake a radiant Springtime glow that lasts for hours. (AU$24, ModelCo)

Kardashian Beauty Sea Coral En-Joystick Lip Lacquer swatch & review

Kardashian Beauty Sea Coral En-Joystick Lip Lacquer
Kardashian Beauty Sea Coral En-Joystick Lip Lacquer
Sometimes it really helps to have low, low, low, low expectations for celebrity beauty lines. It means I’m not disappointed when celeb perfume #2837892 smells like candy and flowers, and it also means that I can be pleasantly surprised when something is a legitimately good product. Kardashian Beauty Sea Coral En-Joystick Lip Lacquer has an appallingly punny name, and the Kardashian marque isn’t exactly something I’d normally go out of my way to buy from, but I can ignore all of that, because this is a surprisingly good lipstick.
Kardashian Beauty Sea Coral En-Joystick Lip Lacquer
Kardashian Beauty Sea Coral En-Joystick Lip Lacquer
Sea Coral is a creamy apricot lipstick in a wind-up tube applicator, like a skinny version of a LipPerfection crayon or a Chubby Stick. The narrower application points suits the highly opaque lip cream; sheer gloss balms can afford to be a bit sloppy, but the fine tip means you can wield this lip lacquer and get a crisp clean line exactly where you want it to go.
Texture-wise this lip cream is pretty much note perfect. It’s a highly opaque cream which doesn’t require more than a single stroke to achieve full colour, even without a lipliner or neutral base on my rosy pink lips. It dries to a neutral velvety finish with no stickiness or tackiness, and it wears evenly without balling or pilling.

Sea Coral is one of those colours that I expected to have a thousand identical dupes, but it took a fair amount of scratching around to find colours that were similar. From left to right:
The closest colour to Sea Coral is MAC Cosmetics Gotta Dash!, which is both a) a much glossier finish and b) twice the price.
Short version: ignore the Kardashian name, because this is an outstandingly good opaque wind-up lipstick with a price that’ll get you change from a twenty, in a fresh apricot colour that’s perfect for Spring.
