Dior 5 Couleurs Mystic Metallics Constellation EOTD, swatch & review

I’m fairly sure I’ve spoken before about a previous life where I was thin and pretty enough to be a Dior Girl. I worked mostly at the David Jones story on Castlereagh St, alternating between smiling winsomely at bored husbands as I enticed them to treat their wives to a surprise bottle of J’Adore (as I said, I was a lot  younger and cuter then), and doing makeup appointments. It was always a big deal whenever the new Dior makeup collections came out, because more often than not it meant one thing: new Dior 5 Couleurs palettes!
Now, quite a few years later, I still get that little pop of excitement when I unbox a brand new Dior palette. Partially it’s fond memories of a happy period in my working life, and partially it’s because if you don’t get a little rush of endorphins from unwrapping something luxurious and pricey then you’re either dead or have shunned all earthly indulgences (in either case this so, so isn’t the blog for you.)
Which, finally, brings me to the little luxury that crossed my desk last week: Dior 5 Couleurs Mystic Metallics Constellation, a new eyeshadow quint from the Fall 2013 Mystic Metallics collection.

There are five shadows in the Constellation palette, all in shades of pink or purple with one antique gold contrast shade. The shadows are embossed with Monsieur Dior’s signature star charm, with the high shimmer shades marked with a scattering of stars and the satin shades with just one.
  1. Soft antique gold in a glittery shimmer finish. This can be applied dry for a very sparse shimmer fleck effect, or applied wet to create an intense foil effect.
  2. Dirty mauve with a satin finish.
  3. Deep plum with silver sparkle.
  4. Mushroom pink with a satin finish.
  5. Icy pink highlighter with a frost finish.
Wearability is average, with the colours applying sheerly when applied dry. If you want to max your colour potential I suggest applying with a damp brush over a primer base, and possibly using a plum cream shadow as a base if you wish to saturate the purple colour palette. The shadows themselves are an excellent texture, soft enough to be easily picked up with a brush but not so soft that they crumble or scatter.
While the sheerness of the shadows might be a dealbreaker for hardcore makeup enthusiasts, I think that it makes this palette a wearable option for folks who want to look polished and ‘done’ without looking, well, overdone.

For this look I used the two satin finish colours to create a very simple soft smokey eye. I applied the mushroom pink across my lid with a damp brush to boost its lustre, then applied a soft wash of the deep dirty mauve on the outer corner of my lid  and into the crease.

For this look my goal was to distract from the fact that I’ve been under the weather for a while, so I cranked up the metallic shine by applying the antique gold glitter shadow with a wet brush. This amped up the shine and opacity, creating an eye-catching sparkling lid offset with simple bronze liner and black mascara. Remember the magic rule of makeup: sparkle can be a useful distraction when applied judiciously!
